Google is the Internet search machine of the company Google Inc. with seat in Mountain View (the USA). The company was created on 7 September 1998 by Larry PAGE and Sergey Brin. On the same day a first test version of the program was brought on the market. Still in the same year the search machine went officially to the net.

Google offers a multiplicity of to a large extent advertising-financed free services in the World Wide Web. It concerns particularly the search on different data sources. In the following an overview of the most important services.

• Text documents in the Web - the most well-known and usually-used service is the full text search of documents in the World Wide Web. Beside the HTML format usual in the Web Google scans also different document types as for instance pdf, Postscript or the Doc format of Microsoft Word. Main factor with the weighting of the search results is the link popularity; the complete algorithm becomes however from Google Inc. secretly held, in order to make copying more difficult the service on the one hand and a misleading optimization commercially or other sides the Googlesuche on the other hand.
• Image files in the Web - Googles picture search uses words in the file name as well as in HTML documents, which use a picture, in order to offer a search for image files. The diagram formats JPEG, png and GIF are supported. A search for picture contents or to a given picture similar pictures is not possible.
• Usenet - Google possesses extensive archives of newsgroup articles, which go back to 1981 with Google Groups. • Products - with Froogle one can look for goods offered with on-line dealers. In particular a price comparison is possible.
• E-Mail - Gmail (in Germany Google Mail) is Googles E-Mail service. One can read or by POP3 with the own E-Mail program fetch its Mails either completely in the Web.
• Translation - an automatic translation between some languages is offered for web pages.

The term "„Google "“

Etymologie

The designation Google is based on a wordplay with the American discussion of the word googol. Milton Sirotta (nephew of the US-American mathematician Edward Kasner) invented this expression in the year 1938. It wanted to give to the number with unity and one hundred zeros (10100) a name. The Google founders again were on the search for an appropriate name for the abundance at information, which should be found with its search machine in the Web.

The name is to let the association with an enormous number of indexed web pages arise. In reality it acts to time around something over 8 billion (according to operator data: 8.168.684.336 on 11 August 2005 22:43 Central European Summer Time) sides. • 1995 - Larry PAGE and Sergey Brin meet to the Stanford University. They conceive the search machine BackRub - a Google forerunner.

• July 2003 - A German-language intelligence service is offered. Allegedly here Google news without human intervention develops.
• 1. April 2004 - Google starts the beta version of the free E-Mail service Gmail with 1 GB memory
• 29. April 2004 - Google announces the for quite some time expected course to the US stock exchange.
• On 1 August 2004 on-line registration for the IPO (stock exchange course) started, from which one expected proceeds of 3.3 billion US Dollar. • 21. December 2005 - Google communicates the acquisition of 5 per cent of the shares of AOL (Time Warner). Thus Google a large success succeeded against Microsoft, which were likewise interested in such an assumption.
